Are you the kind of person who loves being fit and active? Or the kind of person who gets itchy feet just sitting around when on holidays and has to keep moving? Yes? Then an active holiday may be for you.
There are a number of reasons why you would want to go on an active holiday. Active journey based holidays, whether on a bike, a hike or a swim, allows you to enjoy the scenery in a different view to your regular bus tours. Active holidays are also good for shedding KG’s and concentrating on your health and fitness without the usual distractions you get at home. Whatever your reasons, active holidays are a new interesting take on getting away from your mundane 9-5.
Journey holidays are a really great way of getting to know the country you’re visiting. Hiking holidays are quite well known and can be quite challenging. The Inca Trail in Peru, Mt Kilimanjaro in Kenya or even Base Camp Mt Everest are popular destinations for those who enjoy days (and days) of walking while enjoying the spectacular scenery on offer. But did you know you could also do Swimming Journey Holidays. Ocean Swim Safari trips travel all over the Pacific to Fiji, Vanuatu, and Tonga (Check out the feature photo for this article which was taken by Mr OceanSwims himself at one of their Pacific Adventures). Patrons enjoy daily swimming from island to island, across channels, over reefs and even in secret caves. They also now have European trips to Spain and Greece on offer. Imagine daily swimming along Costa Brava making your way from Spain to France! Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a world champion swimmer to enjoy these swim safaris. The pace is leisurely and the swims are between 1.5km -4km. The groups are so small and the company is so good, it just feels like you are hanging with family.
Journey holidays can also happen on Bikes. Cyclo Mundo (a company based out of France) has bike tours in France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. They offer either self guided trips or expert guided tours. They’ll give you a bike and will port all of your luggage for you from destination to destination. On the self guided tours, Cyclo Mundo will give you a map with two options; 1. The scenic route or 2. The quick route. Choose how you want to get to you daily destination and how long you want to take to get there. We’ve all seen footage of le Tour De France and how incredibly beautiful it can be. Well you can do just that (but maybe leave out the Pyrenees and Alp d’Huez).
What if you want an active holiday but want to focus on your health and fitness with high intensity workout sessions….well then Active Escapes may be for you (check out their Instagram account for some inspiration). With the backdrops of Bali, Maldives and Hawaii, how could you ever go wrong! Active Escapes offers 7 day holidays to the world’s most beautiful tropical destinations with a mix of hard core exercises sessions and fun activities (surfing, paintball, kayaking etc) as well as daily massages and sunset drinks (just don’t over board with the mojitos when you have a stair session the next day….ouch!). Active Escapes often have guest trainers including the likes of Olympian and Commonwealth Games athletes Michael Klim and Amanda Bisk (check out her awesome Instagram account!).
If you are serious about your training and want to skip the sunset drinks and fun surfing for more serious exercise, then you should consider Tiger Muay Thai boxing in Phuket Thailand. More than just Muay Thai flight training, Tiger offers cross fit training, one on one personal training, boot camps and even yoga. Beware though, a couple of weeks at Tiger Muay Thai and you’ll come back fitter and stronger than you have ever been before.
So whether you’re interested in exploring untouched waters of the Pacific Islands, cycling through the world’s most beautiful country side in Europe, feeling fit and fabulous in Bali or training your arse off in Thailand, then an active holiday may be for you.
